Monica Mitchell

My formal art-making practice is an exploration of drawing and form. I borrow ideas from several sources: mythology, gender, masquerade, pattern, music, nature and consumerism. I use found objects, fabric and duct tape, as well as traditional drawing and painting materials. The juxtaposition between found objects and traditional art materials creates meaning by association. Visual elements such as pattern and color bring to our attention the many relationships between artificial and natural worlds.

I was born into a family of musicians, educators and artists. My parents met while teaching in a small public school in the mountains of Puerto Rico. My father was the band director, and my mother was the art teacher. The apple did not fall far from the tree. I started taking Suzuki violin lessons at the age of six and was drawing well before.

When not playing violin or working in my art studio, I teach elementary general music in public school. I play classical and folk violin. I live in Portland, Oregon with my husband and two cats.
