I like psychedelic guitar solos, blues or just plain good classic rock. But I love Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin or Rachmaninoff. Since starting to paint to their music, I have become obsessed. Clearing my thoughts, just listening to the music, my mind transforms the sounds into shapes, patterns and colors. I hear bursts of energy, or soft floating melodies as they reveal the spectrum of human emotions... melancholy, sadness, joy, anger.
My preliminary sketches start with scribbling to the sound, listening over and over until the shapes and patterns become defined. The task is difficult and frustrating, and I am just in the beginning stages of attempting to give visual form to the work of a composer. I am learning as I go.
Combining rational thinking and emotion, as in a classical musical compositions, and expressing it artistically is the basis of what I am working on. I can easily express sadness or joy on a canvas, but I find that feeling the emotions and being able to express them are not enough. Technique, rational thinking, the power of observation and the ability to observe how I react to my own artistic impulses are all necessary in the development of a painting. So, how does one go about fitting rational thinking and feeling together. I think the only way forward will be to explore and experiment allowing my successes and failures to lead the way.
