Art Passport PDX and launch reception

Art Passport PDX

Launch Reception: Thursday, March 16, 6–8:00PM at Blue Sky Gallery

Program Run: March 16–June 15, 2017

In response to the news that 10 Portland galleries and 1 museum closed in 2016, arts writer and arts activist Jennifer Rabin founded Art Passport PDX, a free public program to foster engagement in the visual arts.

In asking members of the community what was keeping them from going to the galleries, she heard things that surprised her: people didn’t think they should walk into a gallery unless they were prepared to buy something, they didn’t think they knew enough about art to be able to ask the “right” questions, they feared being looked down upon because they didn’t have a lot of money.

Rabin handpicked eight local galleries—from blue chips to nonprofits—that she knew would welcome newcomers with open arms, answer questions, and share what they love about art.

To participate, members of the community can pick up a passport book (at the
launch party or at any of the participating galleries) and fill it with stamps from the participating galleries. To get a stamp, a participant needs to have a conversation with someone at the gallery about the art. They need only to be curious and to trust that their observations and questions will be meet with encouragement and enthusiasm.
