OCTOBER 2019: ROBERT DOZONO: Old and New—Garbage Paintings and Other Works

For the past 30 years, Robert Dozono has given expression to his regard for the environment in part through painted works that feature the reuse of objects that one cannot recycle—plastic items without numbers, wiper blades, rubber bands, toothpaste tubes, hair dryers, etc. Many of his paintings are large river scenes of the Clackamas River and other areas of Oregon. The rivers and their unfortunate interaction with humans are particularly evident to him when he and his friends fish. Sometimes, they try to carry out garbage others have left. In these works, he attempts to foreground what we are doing to our natural resources by using a canvas layered with what is normally cast aside.
